Before I started working in online marketing I thought that SEO is something extremely difficult, but as it turns out it is not!
It is time consuming for sure, but if you know your target and if you know what to do – you’ll get some targeted traffic for free.

I know I mentioned some SEO tips in my previous newsletters, but practice makes perfect!

So couple more tips (there will be more next time, so stay tuned!):

Domain name – what is better?

  • Having top keyword in it is an advantage! Get a keyword tool (e.g. http://www.google.com/sktool/#) that can give you more suggestions. Many free ones are available online. They will be able to tell you the keywords or phrases that are the most popular in a particular region and likely to bring you the traffic you want.
  • If targeted to a specific country, get their TLD
  • Check for expired domains, so if you manage to snap one, it will have some history (make sure it doesn’t have negative page rank): http://www.expireddomains.net

Meta tags, SEO keywords, title:

  • Look at your competitors’ sites (to the source code of it) to check which Meta tags they’re using. Pick the relevant ones and use them for your site (Meta tags section <meta name=”keywords” content=” keyword1, keyword2, keyword3, keyword4, keyword5, keyword6, keyword7, keyword8, keyword9, … etc.” /> )
  • The META description tag usually consists of 25 to 30 words or less using no more than 160 to 180 characters total (including spaces). The META description also shows up in many search engine results as a summary of your site. (Meta tags section <meta name=”description” content=”Dating site name – dating site for people looking for a date”/> )
  • The page title element is one of the most important factors for ranking highly in the search engines. Page title elements are normally 3-9 words (60-80 characters) maximum in length, no fluff, and straight to the point. This is what shows up in most search engine results as a link back to your page. While setting up make sure there’s a page name macro following your title: – {%PAGE_NAME%}, so the titles will be different on all the pages (so you’ll avoid penalty for duplicat5ed content)
  • If you’re targeting another country, I would recommend using SEO Global extension for Mozilla Firefox for better market analysis. It allows you to see how the SERPs look in different countries (I would recommend to adjust language preferences accordingly to your investigation).

Onsite optimisation: ALT attribute:

Alt text is the line of text you see pop up (in Internet Explorer, see note below) when you place your cursor over an image. It also displays a text representation of the image when the user has images turned off in their browser (this is the intended behavior). It is highly recommended that you utilize this area as it is required under accessibility laws and, is indexed by the search engines.

Note: Internet Explorer (IE) will display alt text when you hover your cursor over an element that utilizes the alt attribute. This is incorrect behavior as the alt text is designed to be displayed when the user has their images turned off while browsing. Other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla will not display the alt text on hover.
Alt attributes are not to be stuffed with irrelevant keywords or phrases. The alt text should mirror the content of the image. If it is a graphic header, then your alt text should mirror the text in the graphic header.
Alternative text values should not exceed 80 characters in length. If more than 70-80 characters are required one should use the longdesc attribute as an alternative to alt text.
Make sure your Alt Attribute is relevant to the content for that image.

EXAMPLE: <img src=”smiley.gif” alt=”Smiley face” />
